Welcome to the Privilege Manager Community

Quest Workspace Privilege Manager (formerly ScriptLogic Privilege Authority) allows administrators to elevate privileges for specific programs, windows features or ActiveX controls, without running every user as an administrator.

Privilege Manager provides a powerful, flexible way to tighten overall security on a workstation, without preventing people from doing their jobs. It is available as a Professional Edition and a free Community Edition.

Professional Edition includes additional security capabilities and technical support from Quest Software. This Community Edition is for all Privilege Manager users to collaborate, brainstorm new elevation rules, share rules with other users, and provide bug reports and enhancement requests back to Quest Software.

I did search the forum, but the most recent post I saw was from October 2011. I have used "verified rules" from the community to allow my users to update Flash *when prompted* -- it goes through the entire process to 100% complete and then fails.

It is working from Adobe.com, but the automatic prompt to update is not working.

Has anyone found a solution to this? I do have integrity set to high.

Thanks.

Hello Mark,

I have been able to get a rule for the flash updater to work in the past, so I will try to help you out. Can you provide me the following information:
- What is the client OS and is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
- What version of adobe flash is currently installed?
- What version of Privilege Authority are you currently using: client and server side?

Here are several items to verify that could make a difference:
- make sure that the rule "Process Integrity Level" is set to "High" (this is found on the "Integrity" page which is displayed by clicking on the "Display advanced options"),
- make sure that the "Administrators" group is added on the Group page
- on the "Type" page, make sure that the "Apply settings to child processes" is checked

Let me know if these help, and if not, provide me with the info from above and I will test this myself.

~Don

Hi Don,

This is 32bit XP Pro with all latest updates. The most recent version of Adobe Flash (as when it fails, I just go to Adobe site and update successfully from there).

I've just downloaded and installed Privilege Authority about 2 weeks ago, so it is version 2.5.0.92 . I installed it on a 64bit 2008 R2 domain controller.

Integrity is set to high.

Administrator group is added.

Child processes is checked.

Like I said, it goes through the whole process but then fails once complete.

Hello Mark,

Sorry to not get back to you sooner on this.

I have been trying to recreate by installing older versions of the flash player so that I will get prompted that t newer version is available, but the automatic prompting is not occuring for me. If I go to the Flash control panel applet and press Check Now, it just goes to the Adobe site and lets me click to download and install the latest, but this works for me (and for you based on your previous message).

What version of old Flash are you installing which then alerts you that an newer version is available, upon which fails to install? And once you have the older version installed, what seems to trigger it alerting you to a later version being available?

Hello Mark,

I just noticed that when I imprted the rule for the Flash updater from the Community, the path in the rule is being substituted with an incorrect environment variable.

The path in the Community rule is "C:\Windows\Sys*\Macromed\Flash\FlashUtil*_*.exe", but when I import it, that has been replaced in my rule with "%WindowsFolder%\Sys*\Macromed\Flash\FlashUtil*_*.exe".

%WindowsFolder% is not a correct environment variable. It should actually be %Windir%. Try correcting this in your own rule to see if this actually fixes the problem for you.

If it does, please let me know.

Hello Mark,

I was just able to verify my above posted fix should work. Once I corrected my rule as above, I then triggered the Flash Updater by executing the following from a command line:
C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\FlashUtil10x_Plugin.exe -update activex

Before I had corrected the rule, I would get a UAC prompt.
After correcting the rule, there was no UAC prompt and the update completed successfully.

I will log this problem with the rule import as in our problem tracking system so that we can get this corrected soon.

Let me know if you still have a problem after trying this.
